The Hero's Journey
Joseph Campbell came up with the theory that many stories from different cultures follow the same routine pattern. Although different authors have variations in the story that make this repetitive plot interesting, many popular books and movies fit Joseph Campbell's pattern. J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit is a prime example of this, however there are numerous others that can be grouped into the category of a hero's journey.
